How airplanes fly inspires future aviators, astronauts, scientists, and leaders using the magic of flight. Discover through hand-on activities the forces and energy needed to achieve flight. This class motivates students to think like scientists to design their own aircraft using their new knowledge. Use your fascination for aviation and space to make connections to math and science you already know.  Continue exploring with your plane and rocket at home!

Let’s make some music together! No matter how much or how little music experience you have you’ll be able to compose, share and collaborate on a very musical level.  This class is about creating music through a variety of compositional techniques using various software programs and exploring sound. Bring your creativity, a tapping toe and a sense of fun!

Ever wonder what goes on behind the scenes in the world of Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Response? This STEM academy class takes you there. You will have the opportunity to interact with the men and women who provide emergency response to our community and hear about the varied career opportunities in the emergency services field. You will tour an ambulance and view a demonstration of basic lifesaving techniques presented by paramedics. You will hear from Poudre firefighters about emergency preparedness, fire prevention, and home safety audits and have the opportunity to discover the intricacies of a fire truck. In the law enforcement part of the class you will interact with K-9 police dogs, learn forensic fingerprint and DNA collection techniques, visit with SWAT officers, explore the “Bearcat”, and acquire community safety techniques. Join us for this fast paced, hand-on exploration of the world of emergency services.

Do you love science experiments? Do you love to eat? In Kitchen Magic we will do both! In this STEM Institutes class we will explore science and math through the world of cooking. We will investigate chemical reactions, properties of matter, measurement, and volume through experiments in the kitchen. We will be learning real-world applications of science and math as well as creating products that we can eat! No prior experience in the kitchen needed. Join us for a hands-on week of fun as we make connections between cooking, baking, science, and math.

Have you ever wanted to create your own world?! Work with your friends on a team, and get more done in less time. Build your own zoo, aquarium, library, museum, race track, amusement park, greenhouse, school, or even shopping mall complete with fashion and jewelry stores! Working together as a team, students will decide on a concept, make a plan for building, and then execute the creation of their own world inside of MinecraftEDU. No previous experience with Minecraft is required. Newbies will learn, and experts will be challenged. We look forward to using mods that make coding, robotics, and agriculture available. Students will practice their digital citizenship inside a closed MinecraftEDU server, open only to program participants.

Take your love of animals and learn about the different career options that might be perfect for you! Through Animal Science, you will experience various relationships with how animals interact within society. You will contribute by engaging with therapy animals daily, learning about the rehabilitation of wild raptors, and becoming your own explorers by capturing footage of animals in the wild!

Afternoon Classes  11:45am – 2:15pm

Which structure holds the most weight? Using bridges, this class illustrates how engineering is a creative discipline and can become art.  Discover through hands-on problem solving, data analysis, and geometry activities the principles of force, balance, and stability. Understanding these principles allows students to use the Engineering Design Process to build, test, and analyze different structures before a final design challenge. This class wouldn’t be complete without breaking bridges on the last day!

Learn the magic of Newton’s laws of motion, and build a rollercoaster to demonstrate the concepts! Explore the relationship between motion, force, size, mass, and speed. You will be able to explain how balls of different masses can accelerate at the same rate as well as why seat belts save lives. You will participate in many lab activities throughout the week, while learning some of the basic laws of the universe. Maybe you will be the next Einstein!

In this class, students will create an e -textile – a project sewn together that incorporates LED lights! E-Textiles are a great way to add flair to your clothing and costumes, but crafting on a garment can be a challenge for your first project. Making an accessory is a great way to explore sewing circuits on a smaller scale. Through basic sewing instruction and learning about circuits, students will be able to choose a final project that will be facilitated by the instructor. We will use a variety of tools that incorporate sewing and circuits to create anything from a banner to a stuffed creature to a decorative mask or light up patch.

Learn how to use Photoshop! Try your hand at digital drawing and painting! This class will show you some basic features of both Adobe Photoshop and a software called ArtRage. The skills you learn can apply to graphic design, photography, or to fine art. Come and join the fun!!
