Let’s make some music together! No matter how much or how little music experience you have you’ll be able to compose, share and collaborate on a very musical level.  This class is about creating music through a variety of compositional techniques using various software programs and exploring sound. Bring your creativity, a tapping toe and a sense of fun!

Ever wonder what goes on behind the scenes in the world of Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Response? This STEM academy class takes you there. You will have the opportunity to interact with the men and women who provide emergency response to our community and hear about the varied career opportunities in the emergency services field. You will tour an ambulance and view a demonstration of basic lifesaving techniques presented by paramedics. You will hear from Poudre firefighters about emergency preparedness, fire prevention, and home safety audits and have the opportunity to discover the intricacies of a fire truck. In the law enforcement part of the class you will interact with K-9 police dogs, learn forensic fingerprint and DNA collection techniques, visit with SWAT officers, explore the “Bearcat”, and acquire community safety techniques. Join us for this fast paced, hand-on exploration of the world of emergency services.

How airplanes fly inspires future aviators, astronauts, scientists, and leaders using the magic of flight. Discover through hand-on activities the forces and energy needed to achieve flight. This class motivates students to think like scientists to design their own aircraft using their new knowledge. Use your fascination for aviation and space to make connections to math and science you already know.  Continue exploring with your plane and rocket at home!

Travel back to the dawn of time and check out the fossils that give us a record of life on earth. Have you ever wondered how scientists determine the age of rocks and fossils? How fossils are formed? Where to find fossils? Discover the awe and wonder of the geological time scale and the fossils that help scientists understand the past. You will study animal track ways, places to find fossils in Colorado and surrounding states, and we will use fossil leaves to identify climate changes over time. We will also explore the fossils that can be found in Fort Collins, like the dinosaur bones that were found in the Horsetooth Reservoir. You’ll go home with your very own fossil. Never stop exploring!

Do you love science experiments? Do you love to eat? In Kitchen Magic we will do both! In this STEM Institutes class we will explore science and math through the world of cooking. We will investigate chemical reactions, properties of matter, measurement, and volume through experiments in the kitchen. We will be learning real-world applications of science and math as well as creating products that we can eat! No prior experience in the kitchen needed. Join us for a hands-on week of fun as we make connections between cooking, baking, science, and math.

Learn about the excavation of ancient worlds! Put on your Indiana Jones hat and delve into making stone tools, deciphering petroglyphs, and interpreting ancient artifacts. Take what you learn in the classroom out to the field and challenge your learning at our own archaeological site. Do you have what it takes to discover the next big civilization?

Learn the magic of Newton’s laws of motion, and build a rollercoaster to demonstrate the concepts! Explore the relationship between motion, force, size, mass, and speed. You will be able to explain how balls of different masses can accelerate at the same rate as well as why seat belts save lives. You will participate in many lab activities throughout the week, while learning some of the basic laws of the universe. Maybe you will be the next Einstein!
